Install reporting services after SQL sp2

Hello,
our customer tried to update his existing SQL Server 64 Bit Enterprise
Edition with reporting services to SP2. During Setup there was an error with
the reporting services. So the customer decided to uninstall the reporting
services and applied SP2 successfully after that.
Now he needs the reporting services for a new application. Can i install the
reporting services from the original media and then upgrade that reporting
services installation to sp2?What do i have to take care of?
My plan was to install reporting services via software. Change SQL Server
Installation and add reporting services.
I tried that but the setup then comes up with the warning that there is a
version change. I think that is because the sql server has another
patchlevel than the original installation media. Can i ignore that?
thanks in advance
thomasHi Thomas
Although I haven't tried what you are doing, there is not really any
alternative as there is no slipstreamed releases of SQL Server that will go
straight in as SP2, so I guess you have to ignore the error and continue. It
is probably better to install this by hand!

That is the core log;

When I type from the command line msiexec /x {E0A41F96-7231-4AE8-A654-EEB34F935462}

I get: am xmlrl error, fail to load xmlrl.dll, which I do not have in windows\system32

Please tell me how I can fix this problem?

Thank you

Dee

r u sure that there is no beta version of SQL SErver, visaul studio or .net framework on your machine. If exists , remove that and then install sql server

Madhu

I removed all .net programs, sql, and even went through the registry. I even went through tin windows\installer and did some deletes.

I still keep getting the same message.

The log indicates that you have several pre-release products installed, specifically:

Product "{982DB00A-9C4E-436B-8707-18E113BAA44C}" versioned 9.00.1116 is not compatible with current builds of SQL Server.Expected at least version: 9.00.1399.00

The Product Name is "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Data Transformation Services CTP"

These will all need to be removed prior to installing any RTM or post-RTM bits. Check for the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 entry in Add/Remove programs and remove it from there. If that does not exist, try removing the components manually using:

msiexec /x {product code}

Let us know how this turns out.

Mike

|||

As stated above I tried msiexec /x productcode as well as msiexec /uninstall and the name of the product. I keep getting an error regarding xmlrl.dll missing.

Dee

|||

I am still waiting for some help with this problem.

Thank you

Dee

|||

There are a few different solutions for removing SQL in this KB article, http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/909967. See if this helps. Also, could you provide the exact text of the error you are getting when you attempt to run the msiexe /x command?

Mike

Addendum: I talked this over with the support team and they indicate that the KB article should solve you're problem, specifically the section about needing to install the setup support files that reads as below. One point to be warry of, you need to install SqlSupport.msi from the package that you originally installed the pre-release product from, hopefully you saved that.

?

Reinstall the Microsoft SQL Server Setup Support Files component (SqlSupport.msi) before you uninstall each component in the instance.

?

Temporarily refcount the SqlSupport.msi file to itself. To do this, follow these steps:

1.

Obtain the GUID for the Microsoft SQL Server Setup Support Files component. To obtain the GUID, follow steps 1 and 2 from the "If you experience problems" section.

2.

Use Registry Editor to create or to modify the following registry key with these values:

Key Name: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Bootstrap\MSIRefCount
Value: Uninstall
Type: REG_SZ
Data: {11111111-1111-1111-1111-111111111111},{GUID}

Note GUID is a placeholder for the GUID of the SQL Server support files. For example, the GUID of the English x86 SQL Server support files is as follows:

Data: {11111111-1111-1111-1111-111111111111},{53F5C3EE-05ED-4830-994B-50B2F0D50FCE}

|||

I did not keep the original software that I did the install with. I used the SQL Server 2005 CTP. I am trying to use something called ttools.exe and getting no where with it eithers.

So far I have removed everthing but

Dee

Is there any one out there who can help with this problem. I do not want to re-install Windows 2003 server and I need to take my courses.

Dee

|||

You may be in one of those situations where the effort to wipe the disk and start over is less than the cummulative time and effort required to solve the problem.

It's like a go/no go decision point upon application rollout. There has to be a point where management makes the rollback decision EVEN though the developers keep saying it will be just a couple more minutes. And then a couple more, etc.

|||

Don't want to re-install have too many programs and web sites on the system.

Dee

|||

I suggest then, that you review the list of resources I (and Michael) previously posted, and be extremely meticulous removal of all vestiges of the previous SQL Server 2005 and Visual Studio 2005 (including beta and CTP) products. Something is being missed...

And I agree, it 'should not' be so darn difficult. But in your situation, it seems that is the case, you have are chosing to live with it.

I went through Michaels entire post most of the tools I have already, the rest I tried. Neither worked. But now I am getting:

Please tell me how I can fix this problem?

Thank you

r u sure that there is no beta version of SQL SErver, visaul studio or .net framework on your machine. If exists , remove that and then install sql server

Madhu

I removed all .net programs, sql, and even went through the registry. I even went through tin windows\installer and did some deletes.

I still keep getting the same message.

The log indicates that you have several pre-release products installed, specifically:

These will all need to be removed prior to installing any RTM or post-RTM bits. Check for the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 entry in Add/Remove programs and remove it from there. If that does not exist, try removing the components manually using:

msiexec /x {product code}

Let us know how this turns out.

I am still waiting for some help with this problem.

Data: {11111111-1111-1111-1111-111111111111},{GUID}

Note GUID is a placeholder for the GUID of the SQL Server support files. For example, the GUID of the English x86 SQL Server support files is as follows:

Data: {11111111-1111-1111-1111-111111111111},{53F5C3EE-05ED-4830-994B-50B2F0D50FCE}

Is there any one out there who can help with this problem. I do not want to re-install Windows 2003 server and I need to take my courses.

Dee

|||

And then a couple more, etc.

|||

Don't want to re-install have too many programs and web sites on the system.

Dee

|||

But in your situation, it seems that is the case, you have are chosing to live with it.

this can be a viable solution as, in order to install MSDE, admin privileges
are required, so you have access to the full registry, but remember you have
to modify that value using the Client Network Utility on all clients...

Install of SQL express edition with vs2005 pro

I was able to install and use the vs 2005 for the first time today, and it was so far, so good!

However, I would like to know more about how it setup my SQL 2005 Express edition when I installed the full package of vs2005. What I would like to specifically know -- if the instance is using my Windows Authentication, or what the "sa" password might be.

When installing vs2005, it automatically installed SQL Express 2005, without prompting me for setup options on the sql part. Soooo, does is use windows authentication automatically, or some type of default "sa" password.

Very curious to know...

I'm pretty sure that by default it gets installed using Windows Authentication mode, so SA is disabled.

Install issues under IIS6

Hello,
I ran the installer on a windows 2000/ iis5 server and no issues at all, the
server components were available during setup (trial version downloaded from
MS).
I subsequently tried the same thing on a Windows 2003 / IIS6 server and it
says IIS is not properly configured but it does not tell me what
specifically is the problem. IIS works fine on the server, i have over 10
sites hosted and it is working fine.
My guess is there must be a security/permission problem?
Anybody else have issues running the Report Services installer on an IIS6
machine?
PLEASE HELP! :)
thanks in advance,
-ZDRS will not install if you are running IIS 6 in IIS 5 compatibility mode.
You should check that first. If that is not the case then look in the
rsspt<#>.log file, search for prereq and there should be a line in there
telling you what check is failing.

Thanks for your reply. :)
IIS6 is NOT running in IIS5 compat mode.
I am unable to find the rsspt*.log file anywhere on my webserver. Do you
know which directory it's supposed to be in? When exactly is it created? (I
cancel out of the install after I get the warning message saying IIS is not
installed/configured for a server component installation).
Thanks,

I finally found the file, it was named rsstp<#>.log (not rsspt<#>.log).
Anyways, below is the relevant portion of the log that is failing. It seems
as though its looking for W3SVC #1 ' Is that the default website? I deleted
that when I originally configured IIS, but I do have another site from which
the server can be accessed through http://localhost and http://<serverName>
Any ideas?
Thanks

there is no way to change this. After the install the vdirs can be moved

Install fails on x64 cluster nodes.

I can't seem to install SQL Server 2005 (x64 version) on an x64 Win2k3 two node cluster.

I get all the way through the configuration and setup fails because it cannot start a task on the remote node. The error message indicates to check the task scheduler log file, which I have and I cannot find any 'errors' in the file.

Google/MSDN/Technet turn up nothing on multiple searches. Has anyone else run into this problem?

My installation account is a local admin on both machines, so is the sql cluster account. For the life of me I cannot figure out what's different for an x64 install vs 32bit....

Fixed the problem...

My account was not authoritative for the "Domain Services" group.

|||

I have the same problem, can would appreciate it if anyone could elaborate on this "Domain Services" group. What do you mean by not "authoratative" for this group?

Thanks.

This is probably caused by a corruption in WMI in your Windows Server. Try reinstalling WMI. There's information on how to do this at: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/wmisdk/wmi/reinstalling_wmi.asp

Michelle

|||That link doesn't go to a working page..?|||

Well I can't seem to find the original article but here is a couple of things to try.

Can you run “winmgmt /verifyrepository”? If this returns “ WMI repository is inconsistent” then you will have to rebuild the repository. You can rebuild it using “winmgmt /salvagerepository”.

Michelle

|||

Thank you, Michelle.

I am having the same problem trying to install Accounting Express 2007 on my new Vista Ultimate machine.

The machine already has SQL Express loaded. Management Server Express works.

"winmgmt /verifyrepository" runs and says repository is inconsistent...

"winmgmt /salvagerepository" runs and produces:

WMI repository salvage failed

Do you have any problems with the SQL Server on that machine? Like
connection problems, etc.

install error on web server (windows 2003 web edition/iis6)

During the web server install, I used the network service account to run the
report server.
My Error: setup could not initialize the report server. you must manually
initialize the report server before using it for the 1st time. see reporting
services setup doc.
My environment:
sql server = dbs
web server = report server
client = designer
Do I need to run the rsactivate utility on the web server? How is this done?
Is this correct syntax in the command prompt?
rsconfig -m \\<webserver> -u<administrator> -p<password>
Or, if I am logged onto the web server directly; is this the correct way to
activate the report server?
rsconfig -c"C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Reporting
Services\ReportServer\RSReportServer.config"
Thanks,When I tried to pull up the site on my client, I got:
reporting services error
the report server installation is not initialized. check the doc for more
info. (rsreportservernotactivated) get help:

As a result of the error, I restarted the web server and typed in the
address for the reportserver and got prompted to login. I could not use the
servername, but the ipaddress 192.168.0.4/reportserver
It let me in after logging in and displayed the ms sql server reporting
services v 8.
Does this mean that it is working?

in "pending" state. If so, search KB for a suitable part of the error message and you will find the
KB which describes the registry modification you need to perform...

the newsgroup archives and KB. If you don't find anything there, consider posting this to the .setup
group. And be prepared to include the sqlstp.log file.

Thanks for the reply, here is the message:
<<
setup has detected that the previous install attempt was not completed.
Retry to continue installation or cancel to exit setup
...when selecting 'Retry' setup starts to file copy into \program
files\microsoft sql server but fails when trying to run script 1 (as
everything has been removed from drive/registry).
Neil.
