Install RS on SQL2000
except the trial version of RS. Does RS run on SQL Std and Ent only? I
want to play with RS but don't want to install the trial version. Is there
a workaround? Thanks.Hi,
I have SS2000 Developer SP3 AND RS2000 SP2 on my XP SP2 machine with no
problem.
You need to double-check what is the problem with your installation.

Install problems on one system
I have VMWare on a test computer and installed the dev version of SqlServer
2005 fine on the frist VM partition.
However, on the second it won't let me check the reporting services and
requires a strong password. Why?

Thanks for your response.
By default, strong password is a policy in Windows 2003. From your
description, I understand that your SQL Server 2005 ran with mixed
authentication mode and you log on the SQL 2005 with sa account.
I would like to know whether or not you can log on the SQL Server 2005 with
sa account which password is weak. Which place did this issue occurs?
To let me better understand this issue, I would like you could mail me
(changliw@.microsoft.com) a screenshot of your issue.
In SQL Server 2005, you can modify sa password and cancel the strong
password policy via:
Log on into Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio with sysadmin;
Expand the Security folder;
Expand the Logins folder;
Right click sa account and click Properties on the pop menu;
Cancel the selection of "Enforce password policy";
Modify the sa password if you want to.

Not exactly. I have not installed Sql Server 2005 yet because of these two
problems.
1) It has greyed out reporting services and I need to install that.
2) It wants a strong password during install. How can I set it to not
require that during install?
What is weird is this is a Windows 2003 test system and I have another
identical test system that did not have these problems. The only difference
is the other system has IIS installed.
So, how can I fix this?

Let me ask the question a little differently:
1) Why does this copy of Windows 2003 have a strong password policy when
another test system that I installed the same does not?
2) The password it will not allow for Sql Server it did allow as the
administrator password for Windows itself. How is it there is a policy that
requires the strong password only from Sql Server?
3) How can I turn off this policy for all of Windows on this system? It's a
test system so we don't want strong passwords required.

Appreciate your response.
For your first question, Windows Server 2003 has strong password policy by
default, so if another test system doesn't have that policy, it may be
changed.
For your seconde question, SQL Server doesn't force a database to have
strong password even Windows 2003 has that policy. However this is decided
by authentication mode of SQL Server 2005. If you log on your SQL Server
2005 with Windows Authentication, your SQL Server password policy is based
on Windows policy and should be changed in Windows security policy;
otherwise, if you log on SQL Server 2005 with SQL Authentication, you can
modify the password policy in SQL Server 2005 Management Studio:
1. Expand the the Login of Security node;
2. Right click the login account and click Properties;
3. Cancel the selection of "Enforce password policy".
For your third question, if your computer is in domain, you need cancel the
policy in your domain contrller first. For local configuration, you can do
via "Start->Administrative Tools->Local Security Policy->Account
Policy->Password Policy". Please refer to the following articles to change
the policy:

Install MSDE2000 failed
I'm on Win2000 Pro Version 5.00.2195
I've installed succesfully Microsoft SQL Server 2000

Hello,
I notice the following information in the verbose log:
Entering Function MyMsiEvaluateCondition
MsiEvaluateCondition for SQLMSDEInstalled returned TRUE
End Function MyMsiEvaluateCondition

Action ended 19:01:19:
RestoreSetupParams.2D02443E_7002_4C0B_ABC9_EAB2C06 4397B. Return value 3.

This problem occurs if the previous MSDE setup is not uninstalled
successfully. I recommend you refer to the following article to remove MSDE:
320873 HOW TO: Manually Remove a Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine
(MSDE
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=320873
You can perform the following steps to remove the MSDE 2000 installer
references:
Step 1: Download and install Msizap.exe.
Step 2: Determine the ProductCode for the MSDE instance that was installed.
You can find the ProductCode key value in the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\ Setup
The ProductCode key value may be {E09B48B5-E141-427A-AB0C-D3605127224A}
Step 3: Use Msizap.exe to remove all Windows Installer information for the
ProductCode of the MSDE 2000 instance.
1. Backup your registry file.
2. Click Start > Run, type CMD and press Enter.
3. Type the following line at the command prompt:
"C:\Program Files\MsiIntel.SDK\Tools\MSIZAP.EXE" T
{E09B48B5-E141-427A-AB0C-D3605127224A}
Note: you need to replace "C:\Program Files\MsiIntel.SDK\Tools" with the
folder which MSIZAP.EXE locates. You need to replace the
{E09B48B5-E141-427A-AB0C-D3605127224A} with your MSDE 2000 ProductCode.
Step 4: Follow the steps in the article 320873 to remove MSDE.
I hope the information is helpful.

Install issues under IIS6
I ran the installer on a windows 2000/ iis5 server and no issues at all, the
server components were available during setup (trial version downloaded from
MS).
I subsequently tried the same thing on a Windows 2003 / IIS6 server and it
says IIS is not properly configured but it does not tell me what
specifically is the problem. IIS works fine on the server, i have over 10
sites hosted and it is working fine.
My guess is there must be a security/permission problem?
Anybody else have issues running the Report Services installer on an IIS6
machine?
PLEASE HELP! :)
thanks in advance,
-ZDRS will not install if you are running IIS 6 in IIS 5 compatibility mode.
You should check that first. If that is not the case then look in the
rsspt<#>.log file, search for prereq and there should be a line in there
telling you what check is failing.

Thanks for your reply. :)
IIS6 is NOT running in IIS5 compat mode.
I am unable to find the rsspt*.log file anywhere on my webserver. Do you
know which directory it's supposed to be in? When exactly is it created? (I
cancel out of the install after I get the warning message saying IIS is not
installed/configured for a server component installation).
Thanks,
-ZD

I finally found the file, it was named rsstp<#>.log (not rsspt<#>.log).
Anyways, below is the relevant portion of the log that is failing. It seems
as though its looking for W3SVC #1 ' Is that the default website? I deleted
that when I originally configured IIS, but I do have another site from which
the server can be accessed through http://localhost and http://<serverName>
Any ideas?
Thanks

Install failure: "Error 29550. Cannot connect to the SQL server instance
box and have it use an Sql Server 2000 (w/SP3) instance on another box.
Both the RS and SqlServer boxes are Windows 2000 Servers. Neither are
part of a "windows domain"--neither will they ever be. We only connect
to SqlServer via a user/pwd pair. Additionally, there are 2 instances of
SqlServer running on the box and both of them listen on custom ports. (I
have confirmed that I can successfully connect to the desired SqlServer
instance from the RS box.)
The error I got was the "Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not
associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.". The installer
attempts a domain login when I explicitly told it *not* to. I found no
way to get the installer to successfully connect to the database. The
solutions I've found on the web/Usenet have not worked either.
Since I couldn't get it to install through the GUI, I switched to using
an .ini file. Of course, it's not working either. The (500KB!) log file
the installer produces has only one useful line in it: "Error 29550.
Cannot connect to the SQL server instance ." That meant that the problem
was the RSDATABASESERVER variable. The instructions tell me to specify
an "SQL Server 2000 instance in format MACHINE\INSTANCENAME". I played
around with that value a lot; I wondered how it could figure out what
port to connect to for one thing. While doing so, I tried sniffing the
network to see if that would help me at all--it just got me more
frustrated: no attempt is made to contact the server! Ever.
First off: WHY choose this uncommon, inadequate format for specifying a
server? Why not just use an alias from "cliconfg" like everything else?
Second: why doesn't the installer even *try* to login to the server? If
there's a reason it can't access the network, wouldn't you think that
500KB log file is a good place to mention it?
What do I do? (Hint: don't suggest making either box part of a windows
domain)
GrangerTo have setup use sql auth during setup you must pass in command line
parameters. The params are RSSETUPACCOUNT and RSSETUPPASSWORD
so run this command
setup.exe RSSETUPACCOUNT=foo RSSETUPPASSWORD=bar
This will allow you to use the setup GUI still but all communication with
the backend server will use sql auth. Note that the setup user needs to be
a dbo. You can safely use the sa account as it is only used during setup.

trying to use the "sa" account from the beginning because the instructions say
the "setup" account is only used during setup.
My problem is still that the installer doesn't even *try* to connect to the
database server. Once I can get around that, my problem will be that it will
want to use Windows Authentication because the connection information only
consists of "server\instance"; that's why it has to login: to figure out the
port the instance lives at.
If anyone knows the person responsible for the decision to use this connection
method, please smack them upside the head for me.
Other ideas?

configuration say?
I take it that on the general tab you have TCP/IP listed at the top - click
the properties tab and is the port set correctly for your particular
instance?
I am running reporting services stand-alone - with SQL Server NOT IN A
DOMAIN - and it runs just fine.
You can also create an ALIAS name to the server instance in the SQL Server
Client Network utility.
Finally, just to be sure we are "connecting the dots" here - fire up the SQL
Server Network utility and verify that the TCP/IP properties are also
listening on the correct port. (I bet they are since you are using the
system successfully)
Last but not least, even if you are using SQL Server authentication, you
should be able to use windows authentication only when doing the setup -
since as you said you have full control over the dev box - then you have
local admin rights - therefore you should be able to logon unless you have
modifed the BUILTIN\Administrators security for that machine. (I assume that
this is not the case).
Please let me know if you are still having an issue, I'll be happy to help
you out.
Of course, this may come as a dumb question, but I assume nothing: Did you
install SP3a for SQL Server? (I assume yes), did you install the SQL Server
hotfix 859 ?

The connectivity is all OK. It appears I'm just going to have to go
sync the administrators on each of the boxes during the install.
However, that won't be for a while; I just gave up and installed
everything on my own box for now. When I've had a chance to play with it
for a while, I'll do another install attempt in a more "proper" DEV
environment.
As far as the updates on the database go, my DBA says he's only done
security bulletin stuff. I looked it over and it seems the DEV box has
SP3 not SP3a (I checked the Ssnetlib.dll; we have 2000.80.760 not
2000.80.766
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;819334)). Also,
since Enterprise Manager reports 8.00.760, I gather he's not done any
hotfixes. This KnowledgeBase article
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;888007) implies
we should be at least at .977. I'll go tease him for being a slacker. ;)
I wouldn't guess the hotfixes would have anything to do with my
problem, however, since my local database only has SP3 installed on it
and ReportingServices installed fine.
Again, thanks Chris =)

Install fails on x64 cluster nodes.
I can't seem to install SQL Server 2005 (x64 version) on an x64 Win2k3 two node cluster.
I get all the way through the configuration and setup fails because it cannot start a task on the remote node. The error message indicates to check the task scheduler log file, which I have and I cannot find any 'errors' in the file.
Google/MSDN/Technet turn up nothing on multiple searches. Has anyone else run into this problem?
My installation account is a local admin on both machines, so is the sql cluster account. For the life of me I cannot figure out what's different for an x64 install vs 32bit....
Fixed the problem...
My account was not authoritative for the "Domain Services" group.
|||I have the same problem, can would appreciate it if anyone could elaborate on this "Domain Services" group. What do you mean by not "authoratative" for this group?

Install enterprise manager on 64 bit server
version of sql server, running on windows 2003 server?
Thanks,
JeffI'm pretty certain that there is code in there that doesn't run on 64 bit,
hence why MS removed the client tools from the install in the first place.

Install Developer Edition & Express?
Hi: I have installed SQL 2005 Developer Edition and VS 2005. Do I need to also install SQL 2005 Express edition too?
My version of VS2005 is proffesional. I cannot seem to find SQL 2005 Developer Edition in the Server Explorer of VS2005. So I am wondering if I need to install SQL 2005 Express. Before I had SQL 2000 and MSDE installed with VS2003 and there was no problem.
Thanks
no need to install express.|||So I do not need to install express edition. Okay. So why can I not see it using Visual Studio 2005 Server Explorer?
Thanks for your speedy reply.
|||do you dee 'data connections' ?
right click and select 'add connection' follow the wizard
|||Yes that works. But why can I not see it under the Servers node? In VS2003 I have no problem and it appears under the Servers node.
It may be a problem with my install of VS2005 because the Help is not working properly also.
Thanks
Thanks Blair. I will ask MS support when I am talking to them about my help files. I will post the anwser when I find it.
Thanks again for your responses.
Installation Date/Version Numbers
I am very new to SQL Server and am trying to gain some general information
about it. What I am interetsed in is gaining either an installation date from
the software and/or a current version that is running? Is it possible to get
this information?
Many thanks,
David Saunders
Hi David
I don't know if there is an installation date held in the registry, but for
SQL 2005 the installation log directory (...\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG) may be
an indication. For the current product verion use SELECT @.@.VERSION or use
SERVERPROPERTY as described in
http://sqlserver2000.databases.aspfaq.com/how-do-i-know-which-version-of-sql-server-i-m-running.html
If you are running multiple instances on one machine you will need to check
each instance.

Installation and Localisation
we have RS installed on a W2003 production Server without VS (no design) .
This version is a french version , we also install SP1 french version
Everything seems ok and we got a french version ( we are making call of
reports via URL in an aspx page) .
Times to times, and there is our problem, the french version become an
English version ("View Report" in the Toolbar instead of "Afficher le
rapport".)
If we re-install the SP1 we get the french version .
Please help , we have not been able to find any option about this problem
in RS config(s) files
PS: Designing and deployment are made on a developpement W2000 server With
RS and VS in French,
we never swap to English version on this server.
PhilippeThe report server natively supports 9 languages. This is true no matter
what language the install was done in. If your browser settings are set to
French then you will see French if they are set to another supported
language you will see that language.
Supported languages are: Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, English,
French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish.

Then if The language supported by RS is browser dependant (we use IE6) , how
RS can change of language with the same browser, which is in French. (the
only language which appears in language option of general setting TAB of IE
properties)
It looks like , RS can not recognise the language and take by default
English language.

I make a new install of french RS SP1
As i explain in my first message , we have now "Afficher le Rapport" in the
Toolbar.
I add English (US) to languages of my IE6 browser and i move this language
in 1st position , i got "View Report" as expected
I move back French in 1st position , i have "Afficher le Rapoort" in
toolbar as Expected.
I try with German (Allemand) it also works properly "Bericht Anzeigen"
Then we can say that RS is working like you explain.
For how long ? (generally one day or two!!)
A solution will be appreciate, it seems to us that rendering to PDF is also
language dependant as we got somme problems with PDF (bad characters) when
language is English

after a reinstall but that it only works for a period of time. We determine
what languages are supported by the language folders we find under the bin
directory for both report manager and report server. Can you verify that
you have 8 language folders under these directories?

1) First go to /localmachine/reportserver and see if this is localized?
2) Restart IIS rather then reinstalling SP1, Does the problem go away?
Also, what is the OS language?
All this said, we have not been able to reproduce this problem and are not
sure what could cause the scenario you are describing. You may need to
contact PSS for better support on this issue.

yours are not showing up at all. Can you start a new thread so we can try
