Install New Instance/ Store Data & Log Files in existing drive

Hello,
I need to install a new instance of SQL Server 2000 on a cluster.
Currently, we have three instances. Each instances stores program files on
the E:\ Drive. Each instance has its own drive for data and another for
logs. However, there is no more unallocated space on the array to create
another partitioned drive.
My question is: If I create the new instance, can I store the data and log
files on an existing drive? Are there any performance or overhead costs that
should be considered?
Thank you,
Caroline
Each instance must have separate disk resources from any other instances.
You will need new disks to create another instance.

Install new instance

Hi,
I just wanted to install a new instance of SQL Server. I came to the point
where I had to decide, where to install the program and datafiles. Am I
right in assuming, that these have to be different from my default
instance?
TIA
ThomasThomas
BOL says:
"
Each named instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2000 has a specific location
for its program files and another for its data files that is different from
that of the default instance of SQL Server.

Install Error: Previous Program ... Pending File Operations

Here's an interesting one ...
I'm trying to install SQL Server 2000 Developers client tools on XP Pro Svc
Pk2. When I get to the "Computer Name Window" I get the following error
message:
"A previous program installation created pending file operations on the
installation machine. You must restart the computer before running setup."
Obviously I've restarted the machine, run Windows Update, etc. No luck.
I've also tried to look for any other "update operations" from other
products, but no luck there either.
Note: I've installed Virtual PC 2004 Svc Pk 2, XP 2000 Pro Svc Pk 2 and
this Dev SQL Server 2000 and Svc Pk 4 software successfully on this machine,
but under a guest OS. No problems. I've run the same Windows Updates here
too.
Any suggestions? Tons of fun!
Thanks so much!

I have tried to change the name of the file in the regedit and I am still receiving the same error that a previous program installtion created pending file operations on the installation machine. You must restart computer before running setup. What do I do now? i ahve restarted 3 times.

Can you try this?

1. Run command regedit.

2. Check whether the the key

Install

I just installed sql server 2005 express and everything seemed to go well. However I only see the configuration tools under program files in the start menu.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I'd suggest that you start using SQL Express! (Sorry, had to do it.)

SQL Express only includes the database engine and the configuration tools, so you're seeing exactly what you should. You can work with the engine using a number of different tools, here are a few:

SQLCmd - Command line tool included with SQL Express to run T-SQL Commands.|||

Thanks, this helps.

I actually wanted to initially load the free msde but got an error that said:

"A strong SA password is required for security reasons. Please use SAPWD switch to supply the same. Refer tp the readme for more details. Setup will now exit"

I downloaded msde 2000 release A. Is that the correct version for the old msde?

Can you give me any advice on this. Thanks!

David

|||

Hi David,

SQL Express is newer than MSDE 2000 and offers some improved functionality, but if you want to use the older version...

I would go for MSDE 2000 SP4 since that is newer than Release A. The behavior you describe is by design since you must supply a strong password for the SA account when installing MSDE. The readme file that is available on the download page for MSDE explains how to install it and the correct usage of the SAPWD switch.

Inserts to tables as one or two users.

SQL 7.0 SP4
Background: C++ program accesses SQL via ODBC doing
massive inserts to two different tables. The data goes
either to one table or the other, but not both.
Problem: Is it more efficient to have the program access
the database as one or two SQL users?
1. user DOG inserts to table XXX "and" table YYY.
or
2. user DOG inserts to table XXX,
user CAT inserts to table YYY?
Thanks for your help,
DonUnless you need to load them in parallel there isn't any reason to use two
users. Adding connections has a slight overhead that you probably don't
need for this type operation.

will only increase work for you to manage permissions to
two users.
Also, consider using stored procedures rather than direct
insert statements. this will give slight performance gain,
and better management of sql code.
