Install RS Report Server without VS .Net

I want to install RS Report Server component but I don't want to install
Visual Studio. Can it be done ? Because the installer always check for Visual
Studio .Net in the beginning. ThanksYour machine needs to have MS .NET Framework version 1.1 installed, IIS
configured to run ASP.NET, MDAC 2.6 or higher and be able to connect to an
instance of SQL 2000 or even MSDE.
You can find all this info @.

Ignore the warning and continue with the installation. RS will be installed.
Only the report builder needs Visual Studio.

Install report server in msde

Dear all,
Is this possible to install report server in msde
If not, i am a new in reporting services, is it possible to develop and test
just install the report designer?Joe, the simple answer is no, as a minimum you'll need VB.Net 2003 and
SQL2000 Dev. Ed. around £30-£50 each in UK. You can almost fully test
reports in VB.Net but the Report Manager uses an HTML renderer where
the Development environment uses the RS.exe renderer so there can be
differences.
I think RS/SQL2005 is supposed to be able run reports completely stand
alone from SQL server. This is currently in a fairly advanced beta
stage.

Install Report Designer without SQL-Server-DBMS

Hi,
I would like to design Reporting Services-reports with Visual Studio .NET
2003 by using the Reporting Services Report Designer. VS 2003 .NET is
installed on my local machine (OS=Win XP Prof.) and the Report Server I want
to use is an already running Reporting Services installation (SQL Server
2000) which is available through the network. My question is: how can I
install the Report Designer on my local machine without installing the whole
SQL-Server DBMS?
Thanks in advance & kind regards
ChristianSelect only the design components when you install to your workstation.

Am I running the wrong Setup? Is there a separate setup for the designer?

Install Report Designer on XP

I am trying to install Report Designer on my XP development machine. We
already have Reporting Services Enterprise install on our SQL Server. When I
insert the CD it automatically attempts to install the Server components and
fails becuase it is an XP machine. I only want to install the client
components but the install never gets to that point. Is there a way that I
can just install the client from the CD and bypass the System check for the
server compnents.
ThanksNot sure, but I know that the 2005 Developer Edition will work for you,
if that's possible for you to do-
Matt A|||Is it 2000 or 2005 installation?
In 2000, if I remember well you still have the possibility to click on NEXT
and ignore the errors reported by the SCC tool. This will install only the
client tools.

Install Report Designer on another workstation

I have installed RS on a Windows 2003 Server. However, we
prefer to use VB .NET on a Windows 2000 workstation as
Report Designer.
We would like to know what component of Reporting Services
has to be installed on that Windows 2000 workstation after
installing VB.NET ?
ThanksJust run the SQL-RS setup again on your workstation, and select from
reporting services only the client tools. Also run Sp1 or 2 on the client
computer. I got a similar setup as I dont prefer to devolop on the server.

Install Report Designer (RS 2000) on VS2005 Express?

Does anyone know if it's possible to install the Report Designer component of Reporting Services 2000 on one the Visusal Studio Express versions? My client is running SQL Server 2000 in production, and wants to evaluate Reporting Services for an upcoming project. However, they aren't currently running any version of Visual Studio 2003. I know we can buy VB.Net 2003 and then install the report designer on that machine, but they'd like to get buy as cheaply as possible (like, free); hence the interest in using VS Express.
They don't want to commit to SQL Server 2005 or I'd suggest they install the CTP on a development machine and play with Reporting Services 2005.
Thanks,

Install Problems with Report Server

I want to install Reporting Services to find out about how it works, but I'm
having problems.
I tried to install it on my Windows XP workstation to run with MSDE but got
the message:
"This edition of the Report Server Database is not supported on the edition
of SQL Server 2000 you have chosen. Please choose another SQL Server that
matches the requirements."
I therefore specified the name of one of our test servers running SQL Server
2000 and was able to proceed.
When I got to the screen that specified the "Server Farm" it asked for the
name of an existing install of Reporting Services. Since I don't already
have an existing install I left it empty, but was told I was unable to
proceed with the install unless I enter a value. I therefore named the
server I just was installing to.
When the install finished I got a message saying it wasn't possible to
initialise the report server and this would have to be done manually.
I tried connecting to the ReportServer web site but got the message:
The report server installation is not initialized. Check the documentation
for more information. (rsReportServerNotActivated) Get Online
Help -2147159550
I followed the instructions for manually activating the report server using
the reactivate utiltity, but when I tried to activate the server I got the
message:
"Failure obtaining information from remote WMI provider: Unable to find
Reporting Services WMI namespace on 192.111.1.224. Reporting Services may
not be installed."
How can I get Reporting Services running? You somehow got into the installation for a web farm. In a web farm you have
several RS servers all using the same database. That is definitely not what
you are doing. There is a readme file that explains how to install using the
commandline. When you have the database on a different server than Reporting
Services you need to use the commandline. Note that you will need to specify
an account that has admin priveleges with the database.

install of Report Designer onto a machine w/just VS 03 & VB.Net

Hi:
I recently got Reporting Services and am trying to install it. Microsoft's
web site says:
Additional Software Required to Use Specific Features in Reporting Services
a.. Microsoft Visual Studio® .NET 2003 (any edition) or the standard edition
of Visual Basic® .NET, Visual C#® .NET, Visual C++® .NET Standard, or Visual
J#® .NET to use Report Designer. Report Designer can be installed on the
same computer as Report Server components or on a separate computer.
I have the SQL Server on one box, I put most of Reporting Services on
another box (our web server), and I'm trying to put the Report Designer on
my machine.
I have VS 03, with just VB.net, installed on my machine now. It was a
discount version, and didn't have db access wizards, nor any other
languages. It's been ok because I just used System.Data.SqlClient and
System.Data.SqlTypes, etc, to specify my db access, and manually coded the
interfaces and was able to connect fine.
So I'm trying to install Reporting Services - and just the Report designer,
onto my machine so I can author a report or two without writing raw XML.
When I run the install CD I get all sorts of errors IIS not installed, etc,
etc.Where can I get some specific, applicable instructions on doing this
install ?
ThanksI think your problem is that you are trying to install the server and the
client tools. When you install just the client tools you should not be
getting any errors about IIS (IIS is not required for the development
environment).

Install for Designer Add-In only, should I install SSRS SP2?

I have a dev machine which doesn't have sql2k installed on it, but I need to
install the report designer for VS2003 and sql2k. I have service pack 2 for
ssrs 2k but don't know if I should install it or not since I don't actually
have ssrs running on this machine. Should I run sp2 anyway?
thanks.

moondaddy@.noemail.noemailHello,
I understand that you installed report designer for vs 2003 in SSRS 2k, and
you' like to know if you need to install SSRS 2k sp2 on this machine since
you don't actually has SSRS installed. If I'm off-base, please let me know.
As far as I know, You still need to install SSRS sp2 on this machine since
report designer is a component included in SSRS 2k and sp2 shall include
some update for this component. If anything is unclear, please let's know.
Thank you!

install error on web server (windows 2003 web edition/iis6)

During the web server install, I used the network service account to run the

My Error: setup could not initialize the report server. you must manually

Is this correct syntax in the command prompt?

Install Error

Hello, I'm trying to install report services on windows 2003 server. I'm
getting this error message
"System Check Results
IIS is wither not installed or not configured for a server componenet
installation."
I already registed using aspnet_regiis â'i this command and also given
read-write access. I have default website up and running and point to
C:\Inetpub\wwwroot.
Any idea?.Thanks for all your help on this.I am having the exact same issue. Did you resolve it? If so, how?
Thanks in advance.

Installation does not work if you have any other web site running on the same
machine.
I had three website running on the same server, now i have only one report
server website running on that box. Looks like report services only run on
default website. I'm trying to move that virtual directory to different
website on the same box, but i could not get this to work. but i will try to
move this to different website eventually.
Thanks , Pandi

Installation

When trying to install Reporting Services 2000 (Report Manager's server
components) on a Windows Server, the installation does not completely finish.
I use the setup in the first folder on the CD (the default option from
Add/Remove Programs.
Goes through the first part and tells me that installation is complete.
Goes to the screen that tells me I do not have Visual Studio installed on
that box (this is ok because this server is only going to house server
capabilities).
Then it goes to the next installation screen which tell me that installation
may take a few minutes. This screen completes and the message comes up that
I am finished.
The problem is that I never get to the part of the installation that asks
me about security, server\client part installation, etc.
If i try to get to the server's report server, it is not there.
In the start menu, the only shortcut made for RS is books online.
What is being done differently from this installation than past installations?Make sure when you get to the part that shows which things are being
installed that the Server Components are on the list. In prior installs
I know that if the Default WebSite was removed or shut off in IIS then
I wasn't even given the option of installing the Server Components.
If the Server Components are not installed then you won't see the
Report Manager or anything else after the install completes.

Inserting to table with dashes in fieldnames

Hello,

I have had a request, one of our tables is used as a report and I have been
asked that all fieldnames for months have dashes in them,
like Jan-05 instead of Jan05 and so on...

Now what we have is a CURSOR which loops through all values in another table
generating these fieldnames, like 'Jan-05', Feb-05' etc..
Then the table definition is modified so these months display as fieldnames.

That is fine,
Except later it calls another stored procedure which inserts values from
another table into this one.
INSERT INTO TableName
SELECT *
FROM Tablename

Obviously this is failing because the newly amended table now has dashes in
the fieldnames now.

Now as the fieldnames are created dynamically I cannot simply do INSERT
Tablename ([Jan-05], [feb-5]) etc, as one would normally do,

How could I do this bearing in mind its not always going to be 12 months we
use,

Basically I am asking how can I modify this INSERT statement so it takes
into account the fieldnames with dashes in them
Bearing in mind I don't know what the fieldnames are called as they are
created dynamically by a CURSOR in a different routine.
And its not always 12 months.

have you any ideas?
and the dashes are required

JayneDynamically built field names is a bit unusual. But you will most likely
have to dynamically build the insert command and then execute it. Use the
INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS view to define a cursor of column names you need.

This is a design that I would strongly discourage use of. Month data
is best stored as rows in a subtable. Then if someone want to looks
at this with the rows as column, you define a view for him, but let
the underlying tables be.

There are two more cases of violations of good practice here:

1) Always list columns explicitly with INSERT:
2) Don't use SELECT * in production code.

Anyway, if you let this poor table be and define that view instead, the
problem will go away.

This may not be the answer you were looking for, but creating columns
dynamically is definitely not what relational databases are designed for,
and if you go there, it becomes very painful.

I have recently taken over from someone else in a job so for the time being
I am having to work with how the original code is written, plus I am
learning how all the systems hook together.
Yes, in my opinion I would have done it in a View but until I feel 100% sure
of how all the systems work I would rather work this way.

Oh, I solved my problem, the stored procedure was failing at the ALTER TABLE
Column command in that CURSOR,
It was failing because of the dashes in the fieldname, so all I have to do
is surround the fieldnames with square brackets when its creating the
column, like this

Exec ('ALTER TABLE TableName ADD' + '[' + @.ColName + ']' + 'Money NULL')

And yes I know having dashes in fieldnames is a big No No, and normally I
wouldn't do it, later on when I feel more comfortable in my job I will
change this to a View then I can simply create Aliases for the Month Names

Thanks for your help anyway :-)

I think that is a fallacy. You only run the risk to be let out on
lonely winding roads that you have no idea where they lead to or
even is what behind the next curve.

> And yes I know having dashes in fieldnames is a big No No,

I wouldn't say so. After all, SQL is designed to accommodate this
possibility. I don't use it myself, as all those brackets or quotes
makes the code more bulky. I'd say the dashes is the smallest of your
problems.

Inserting Picture in Report Builder Report

Hi everyone,

I want my users to be able to insert the logo when they create reports using report builder. Documentation tells that under Insert tab you can click on "Picture" and then browse to the location of the file and insert a picture. But I dont see "Picture" option under Insert menu. I only see 3 options "text box","Filter Description" and "Total Row Count".

Any Idea?

Thanks

Ashwini

add the text box and then insert a picture into the text box|||By Adding the text box it will not give me any options for inserting the picture. If I right click on the text box only format option is provided and there is no option for inserting picture inside the format dialog.|||

drag the Image tool from the Toolbox to location you want, the Image Wizard will come up.

If you put the Image tool directly into a table or matrix cell it is hard to control the size of it, that is why i suggested adding the text box as a container for the image.

May this be related to some setting you have made during installation. On my instance of report server and report builder you can find the insert picture command under Insert menu.

Read more on sql server books online: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa337126.aspx.

By the way, reply made by dlgross seems to be related to report designer, not report builder.

Yes this is the document which I was talking about in my first post. But I dont see the Picture option under Insert Menu. Is this feature newly added in SP2? or it was there before that also any idea?

Thanks

Ashwini

We recently upgraded to SP2. As I can recollect the insert image feature was ther before we upgraded too.

|||

I have tried a bunch of different scenarios (open from file, open from server, etc) but haven't been able to repro this -- I keep thinking that maybe it's some sort of "rights" thing. Like, if the report is opened from an external server maybe you don't have rights to browse for an image file. I haven't hit any case where it fails yet.

The only other idea I've had is: Have you been trying repeatedly with the same test report? Does it happen with *every* report, or just the one? If just the one, how was that report originally created?

>L<

|||

No I have tried with different reports. I closed and opend the report builder tool many times to make sure if that was the issue nothing worked. And also I am working on my local machine with my local server so permission should not be a problem here I think.

Thanks
