Install Security

Reguarding best practices: when I am installing s SQL
Server Database, best practice would say that I do not use
the Domain Admin or the BUILTIN Admin account to run the
database under. If I cannot use these accounts, what do I
use? My network has Active Directory installed and we are

For fairly high level of security you can use a domain account with user
level domain permissions, on the server grant the permissions (user rights,
registry & NTFS permissions) found in this document:

Install Second Node

How would I go about installing the second node for SQL 2000 cluster? The
first node is up and running.
Think I go it. Thanks-

Install Problem Error 29503 & 1067 OR Error 29503 & 2146885628

I'm new with development and just wanted to get the Personal Website Sample to work. So far, I'm have am having a terrible time installing SQL Express Edition. I'm not exactly sure what to do next. I have installed, manually uninstalled, and reinstalled many times. Sometimes I get error 29503 & 1067. Other times when I reinstall I get 29503 & -2146885628 . Here's the info I got so far for my 29503&1067 since that error occurs 95% of time. I believe I got the -2146885628 error when I changed a setting from network to local services.

I feel so confused right now. Any help would be appreciative.

You cannot install MySQL and expect to run software created to use SQL Server Here is the thing I have installed the kit without problem a whileback and you are having problem so read those tutorials in my recent post the two for this kit and post in the forum I gave to you.

|||I am very very confused now.

I can't install SQL Server Express Edition because I get errors 29503 & -2146885628 during the install process. Thus, SQL Server Express is not installed in my computer.

The links you gave me are troubleshooting tips for the Personal WebKit. Since you gave it too me, I thought I could run it without SQL Server Express Edition but your reply to that makes it sound like I need SQL Server Express Edition which I cannot install due to the errors above. I already install, manually uninstall, etc etc etc. As far as I can tell, during my install process, SQL Server Express Edition just installs maybe 80% of what it should be installing because my summary log says this:

I am assumming because my summary log says "Failed" in the install section, that SQL Server failed to install. I may be wrong and this may be a bug in the summary log.

I am very very confused now. Do I or do I not need to install SQL Server Express Edition first?

Now go do some work and post again.|||

I did a search and found a number of possible causes of this error, but the log segment you provided does not provide enough information to really tell what the issue is. For starters, check out the KB article at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B920114 and see if this applies to your situation.

If that doesn't work, search the log for "ue 3" to find any lines that contain 'Return Value 3' indicating a failure. The several lines above the return value should give you a more specific message about what actually failed to cause the error you're seeing. If that information doesn't point you in an obvious direction, post that snippet to the forum and we can take a look at it.

Install problem

I am having a problem installing SQL express. I have 2.0 framework installed as well as the other express software. I also have Visual Studio 2003 installed. Do I need to uninstall other version of Visual Studio? Do I need to uninstall other versions of SQL. I get an error but it does not tell me what the problem is.

Thank you

Also can we somehow add the icons for the install to our desktop, if so how?

|||Take a look at the following file: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Summary.txt. It should have information regarding the failure with a pointer to the full log file. Install of SQL 2005

If a server is going to be used for just SQL database access - locally on the
WAN - is there any need for IIS?
Does installing reporting services and IIS degrade the machine.
I've got a client whose DBA is debating these issues with the tech who
installed OS and SQL...
DBA wants bare-bones SQL install - thinking of installing IIS/Reporting
Services on another server later if it's ever needed.
Recommendations and opinions would be appreciated.
Best practice would usually dictate that IIS / SSRS are employed on another
machine. However, just like whether you should buy an SL55 AMG or a Toyota
Corolla, it depends...

As already echoed in the thread, start with your minimal footprint and
add as necessary. Reporting Services is pretty easy to get up and
running when need be. Just get your specifications and go from there.
|||Is there a reason to use a named instance?
Is there a reason to not use a named instance?
This will be a large enterprise server - over 1000 users - around 20 or so
buildings across town.
Opinions?
|||No and no. A named instance isn't different from a default instance except for how you access it
from a client (like only machinename or machinename\instancename). So do what feels natural for you.
Well, the one difference I can think of is resolution from machine (or host) name to port number,
when using the IP netlib.
For the default instance, the port is well known (1433). You can change this but that requires that
you specify that port in the client app.
For a named instance, the client queries the "SQL Server browser" service which relies what port
number the desired instance is using. This is done using port 1434, UDP.

Install of MSDE on XP Pro Failed, HELP Please ANYONE!

I have for the past 1.5 weeks been trying to get MSDE installed on a Windows
XP computer. We are installing MSDE sp3 which we have installed on more
than 20+ computers. Some computers Windows 2003 Servers some Windows XP
Pro. We have NEVER had a problem. So before anyone suggest it, I don't
think going to MSDE sp4 will help with this problem. We have formatted the
computer MANY times and started over. We have updated with ALL of the
Windows update and it did not work. We formatted and install only SP2 on
Windows XP. We have taken off all other software, virus scanners, office,
etc. The computer is BLANK. It is on the network and I am remote
desktopped in when I try to install. Now I have done this MANY time remote
desktopped to a machine and no problem. We have made sure that network
items like File and Print Sharing are on. I have tried to install as the
administrator of the computer, as a user who have administrative priveleges,
etc. This computer is a Windows XP computer, not on a domain, the software
is XP Pro, and everything looks good. I am at a lost.
When I install I have it dump out the logs, here is some of the log I get,
it is
to long to post all of it. I have also added the SQL
Error logs that are left below this log. Then below that I have attached
the cnfgsvr.out
Any help is GREATLY appriecated, I can not blank out and install XP any
more.

never had anything installed on it so the link does not help me with this
but I will try to install it in another directory just to see if there is
something wrong with trying to install it in the default location.
What do you mean by:

You are a great help but that was not it. The service is up and running. I
even stopped it and started it, then checked the event log to make sure no
error occured. But everything worked fine. The server service is working
file.

Sometimes you may need to delete this key:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Set up\ExceptionComponents,
then reinstall the SQL Server again.

I tried removing the key after wiping out any registry settings and the
folder from the computer after the last install. I also tried installing in
a different folder since I read some where that might help. But getting rid
of the registry key you meantioned below along with changing the path did
not fix the problem. I still get the same error.
Thank you

|||This is a long shot but you aren't trying to install this through a Terminal
Server connection are you? This will fail with a 1460 error similar to what
you're seeing. The log indicates SQL Server service installed and started
successfully and then shut down. You might try installing with different
options to see if that makes a difference. Since you messed around with the
registry, you may now get different failures related to the registry key
being partially there. SQL Server uses several thousand registry key so I'm
reasonably certain you didn't remove them all.

Yes I am installing through a terminal server connection. I had read
another post were people pointed to that as a POSSIBLE problem but it was
not clear as to why. We have installed over 20+ MSDE systems through
Terminal Server connection and NEVER a problem. But tomorrow I will try to
install on a BLANK machine but this time I will have a local user run the
MSDE install.

What different options are you referring to? I am installing with the
following command line:
setup instancename=<OurInstance> SECURITYMODE=SQL SAPWD=<SomePassword> /L*V
C:\msde.log

> options to see if that makes a difference. Since you messed around with
> the registry, you may now get different failures related to the registry

Some time we try to install again after the install fails, what I do is go
into the registry and strip out everything that has SQL or MSSQL in the key,
that does not relate to ODBC. I figured that was cleaning up everything
because if you could look at the log file what you would see is that MSDE
rollback the install and remove all those thousands of registry keys. But
even if we do not get them all, as I said before we have tried MANY time to
format and re-install on a blank computer. I get the same error whether I
strip out keys or format. So your assumption of a different failures
related to registry key being partially there is incorrect.
Thanks for you help and advice, I will try to install locally and not
remoted, on a blank computer and see what happens. Any more suggestions
would be VERY helpful.

Ok, we were able to install on a BLANK xp computer, we did nothing but
install XP, service pack 2, we did not install any hardware drivers (network
card or video card drivers, etc) we took all the windows defaults.
Plus, we did not remote in and try the installation, we just did the install
locally. The last thing we did was use MSDE sp4 not MSDE sp3 which I do not
think made a difference but I wanted to make sure anyone reading this would
know.
It all installed fine. I think the issue might have either been some other
driver or not installing remotely but we have installed remotely on a lot of
computers so I don't see the reason that would not work. The drivers are
the only other thing I can think of which might be the issue.
But thank to you and Andrea for all your help and I am glad this has been
solved.

Install MSDE need XP disc

I have been installing MSDE2000 on several XP machines. Couple of them asked
for XP installation disc during the installation of MSDE. Others didn't.
Does anyone know why sometimes the installation of MSDE need the XP disc?
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Otto
There might be requirements for things that weren't set up initially, like
TCP/IP/network support, MDAC, etc. I'm not sure of all the system
requirements for MSDE but if these installations are not all identical there
will likely be some required items missing...

Install issue with SQL Server 2005 Enterprise

I am having a really hard time installing SQL Server 2005 Enterprise
Edition. My server definitely meets the hardware requirements of the
server. The server OS is Windows 2003 Enterprise R2. The problem
occurs during setup. After checking my system configuration, it goes
to the window that generates a list of items it is going to install (I
believe). Here, as soon as it starts generating the list, it freezes
the whole server and then shuts down. It does this every single time.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
First thing, check the setup log files in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Files for where the setup failed and for any
error info.

install Express Manager without installing Express

The Express Manager will not install until after installing Express. One reason is because of a dependency on the SMO dll. Can Express Manager be installed without Express if SMO is installed into the GAC first? Is there a way to avoid installing Express?

Things have changed since originally asking the question over a year ago.

A new install of SQL Server Management Studio Express Setup on XP Pro SP 2 resulted in the following dialog box:

Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express Setup

Setup is missing prerequisites:
-MSXML6

Go to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=54583

OK

After downloading and installing MSXML6, SSMS Express installed without any further problems. SQL Server 2005 Express does not have to be installed before or after installing SSMS Express.

|||hello, I never encountered this problem before.

but ever since I started installing the latest package of msxml6 (msxml6-KB925673-enu-x86.exe) at T-13 of Windows XP installation via SVCPACK.INI, along with other hotfixes, I can no longer install SSMSExpress. I received the same error message as above. SQL Server 2005 Express was able to to detect MSXML6 properly. I only have problem with SSMSE. of course, a workaround would be to use original MSXML6 instead, then install KB925673 after SSMSE. but will MS update SSMSE installer?
|||

I removed the MSXML 6.0 with KB925673 from my computer, downloaded the MSXML 6.0 from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=993c0bcf-3bcf-4009-be21-27e85e1857b1&DisplayLang=en but the SSMSEE still throws the same error "Setup is missing pre-requisites MSXML6".

The dowloaded MSXML 6.0 version doesn't say KB925673.

Please help.
