install Express Manager without installing Express

The Express Manager will not install until after installing Express. One reason is because of a dependency on the SMO dll. Can Express Manager be installed without Express if SMO is installed into the GAC first? Is there a way to avoid installing Express?

Things have changed since originally asking the question over a year ago.

A new install of SQL Server Management Studio Express Setup on XP Pro SP 2 resulted in the following dialog box:

Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express Setup

Setup is missing prerequisites:
-MSXML6

Go to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=54583

OK

After downloading and installing MSXML6, SSMS Express installed without any further problems. SQL Server 2005 Express does not have to be installed before or after installing SSMS Express.

|||hello, I never encountered this problem before.

but ever since I started installing the latest package of msxml6 (msxml6-KB925673-enu-x86.exe) at T-13 of Windows XP installation via SVCPACK.INI, along with other hotfixes, I can no longer install SSMSExpress. I received the same error message as above. SQL Server 2005 Express was able to to detect MSXML6 properly. I only have problem with SSMSE. of course, a workaround would be to use original MSXML6 instead, then install KB925673 after SSMSE. but will MS update SSMSE installer?

I removed the MSXML 6.0 with KB925673 from my computer, downloaded the MSXML 6.0 from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=993c0bcf-3bcf-4009-be21-27e85e1857b1&DisplayLang=en but the SSMSEE still throws the same error "Setup is missing pre-requisites MSXML6".

The dowloaded MSXML 6.0 version doesn't say KB925673.

Please help.
